A container of medical equipment and supplies in aid of assisting with comprehensive healthcare to the people in Namibia was handed over by the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust (OOCT) to the Opuwo District Hospital.
The consignment of medical equipment, consisting out of 88 wheel chairs, 11 walking frames, 5 commodes, 5 mobile drip stands, was accompanied by several boxes of plaster and baby changing mats to the total value of N$ 320,000. It was handed over during a formal ceremony in Opuwo on 15 January 2016.
The supply of equipment was made possible with the assistance of Support e.V., Ulm, who is a partner of OOCT, focusing on Healthcare.
Support e.V is a non-profit organization based in the German town Ulm. It was established by a group of medical doctors who made it their aim to support medical projects throughout the world. They support various projects by means of financial & humanitarian means, as well as through donations.
During the hand-over ceremony of the medical equipment, the Governor of the Kunene Region, Hon. Angelika Muharukua, commended Ohorongo Cement for their continued support with their cement donations to the 14 regions during 2015, and for continuing with similar donations to benefit communities. She mentioned that it sets a clear example for other businesses to follow. She further emphasized that the equipment should be well cared for in order to keep it in good condition.
The Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Hon. Julieta Kavetuna, who received the equipment and supplies on behalf of the Ministry and Opuwo District Hospital, gave special thanks to Ohorongo Cement for their continued assistance, stating that it is very clear that Ohorongo Cements takes their social investment very seriously. In her remarks, she thanked all dignitaries who assist in keeping people healthy, and urged Traditional Authorities to assist in driving lifestyle values that will support a more healthy community.
She requested the administration of Opuwo District Hospital to start distributing the equipment as soon as possible, as it is there to benefit the community.
“To want change, we must be the change we want to see” concluded the Deputy Minister.
“As we all know, Namibia faces many challenges in delivering quality health services to the community, with main constraints amongst a few being inadequate medical equipment and supplies. Only when Public and Private sector come together in a true partnership to serve the communities it operates in, can one affect positive change,” said Mr. Rudolf Coetzee, General Administration Manager at Ohorongo Cement.
The focus areas of OOCT is based on 3 pillars: Education, Healthcare and Infrastructure. Many institutions have benefited from donations by OOCT during the past 5 years.
From inception to date donations by OOCT already exceeds ten million Namibian Dollars.
Through the activities of our OOCT Trust, it can clearly be seen that our company is a responsible corporate citizen and try to give back to the community where we can. We desire to inspire, and we hope that by setting an example, we can inspire other companies to follow suit,” said Mr Hans-Wilhelm Schütte, Managing Director of Ohorongo Cement.
