INTRODUCTION FROM THE MD
13 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
Although we have managed to establish ourselves in a brand-new industry in Namibia, it is satisfying to see the giant steps we have taken as company since our inception, this took focus, hard work and facing challenges, to get to where we are today.
As a part of one of the largest global industries, we understand the significance that we as the cement industry hold towards the world due to our considerable environmental and societal impact, while we continue to play a vital role in infrastructure development, economic growth, and job creation we do so in total observance of possible and emerging means to reduce carbon emissions, resource efficiency, waste minimization, water management, health and safety, transparency, regulatory compliance, and support of sustainable construction.
Considering the ongoing crisis of climate change and the rising levels of carbon dioxide CO² in our atmosphere, and as our world continues to grapple with the profound and far-reaching consequences of these challenges, it is imperative that we intensify our focus on addressing them. We as a part of the cement industry recognise that climate change is no longer a distant threat but a pressing reality that affects every corner of our planet, with the increased concentration of CO² in the earth’s atmosphere, primarily driven by human activities, which has accelerated global warming, leading to a cascade of adverse effects, from extreme weather events and rising sea levels to disruptions in ecosystems and food security.
The urgency of this situation demands a collective global response, it is essential to mobilize efforts and resources to not only mitigate the impact of climate change but also adapt to its consequences.
Like many countries, Namibia has faced a complex situation where the cement industry’s contributions to both the economy and carbon emissions need to be carefully balanced, while maintaining stability in economic development, environmental sustainability, and the health and well-being of our citizens, especially during a global crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, which required proactive planning, effective regulations, and sustainable practices within the cement industry.
Therefore, it is crucial that we at Ohorongo Cement are in full support of our government’s efforts in the implication of policies and practices that promote sustainable and responsible cement production, while also addressing the challenges posed by external factors such as future pandemics as this will aid our country in meeting its climate goals, ensuring the long-term viability of the industry, and protection of the welfare of its population.
In any thriving nation, the relationship between the government and key industries is the cornerstone of sustainable growth, the cement industry, is a pivotal contributor to infrastructure development and economic progress and hence we share a profound bond with the Government of the Republic of Namibia. A relationship of its kind that is not of convenience but one of mutual commitment and shared responsibility, dedicated to building a better future for all Namibians. Our enduring relationship with our government and the cement industry is built on a foundation of shared objectives, responsibilities, and mutual benefits.
Our “People” are our most valuable raw resource at the beginning of every production cycle. They are the soul of our company, the uniqueness of our employees and the culture they have created has formed what we affectionately call “The Ohorongo Family” it is the representation of gender, age cohorts, cultures and tribes that has set our company apart.
We take immense pride in the values that underpin our organization, ours are not just words pinned on our webpage or corridors, but we indeed carry at heart that “our cement forms part of every foundation, making a difference for generations to come” our values are our guiding stars that shape our everyday actions, decisions, and interactions.
As we continue our journey, we look forward to building on our success, embracing new challenges, as we continue to be a shining example of how industry and innovation can positively impact a nation and its people.
We will continue creating a single brick, a solitary wall, individual structures, and fortifying our nation.
