STORAGE
Ohorongo Cement is distributed in 50 kg bags, 2 ton bags and bulk tankers. Bulk storage silos should be dry and vapor tight. Cement bags should be protected from moisture and kept dry, preferably off ground by means of pallets or timber, preventing moisture contact.
Bags should be stored away from direct sunlight, or should be covered by a roof or sheeting. Stacking should be kept to a maximum of two pallets high to avoid compaction of cement bags at the bottom.
Cement bags should be stored on an elevated surface (wooden or plastic pallet): – not directly on a concrete or natural surface to protect the bags from dampness rising from the ground.
HANDLING
Normal temperatures and pressures do not affect the product. Personnel working with wet or dry material should wear safety clothing to avoid eye and skin contact and follow health and safety instructions.
- In a dry and shady area (a storage hall / room).
- Not in direct sunlight and protected from frost, rain and moisture by covering cement bags with a plastic sheet or tarpaulin.
- Do not store cement next to food.
HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARENESS
Always wear protective clothing to prevent skin irritation, dermatitis or caustic burning, which may result from prolonged contact with cement as cement and cement paste are highly alkaline. Avoid contact with eyes. If the product comes into contact with the eyes, immediately wash out thoroughly with water. Medical attention may be necessary. The use of dust masks is recommended. To avoid back injuries when lifting cement bags, bend the knees while keeping the back upright. Keep out of reach of children.
SHELF LIFE
Depending on storage, cement can maintain its properties for up to 6 months. Aft er 6 months, cement hydration will be infl uenced inducing negative infl uences on strength gain and high strength concrete.
- First in First Out principle.
- Use the contents of opened bags as soon as possible.
- Lumps in concrete indicate that the bag has been exposed to moisture.
- If lumps can be broken easily by hand, the cement may be used, but add a little extra cement to each mix.
- If lumps are hard, do not use the cement for building applications.
