Medical equipment was handed over by the Ohorongo Otavi Community Trust (OOCT) to the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS) for upliftment in the Omaeke Region.
The value of the donation is hardly measureable in monetary terms due the difference that it makes in people’s lives.
The donation included wheelchairs, walking frames, commodity chairs, scales, blood pressure meters & other medical equipment and was handed over to the Director Omaeke MOHSS, Mrs C. Thataoni, on 31 January 2015 in Gobabis.
The Director was elated about the donation: “This donation is more than welcome and could not come at a better time. Our people are really in need. They have already phoned me to enquire when the equipment will arrive.”
A weird co-incidence caused the Director to deliver the first donation of a wheelchair on the same day as receiving the equipment.
The truck driver delivering the equipment, Mr Willie Opperman, mentioned to Mrs Thataoni that he is a resident of Gobabis and that his son, Willie Junior Opperman, suffers from Friedreichs Ataxia (FA) and is also trapped in a wheelchair.
Friedreichs Ataxia is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder which attacks the muscles, while the brain remains sharp.
Willie Junior inherited the dilapidated chair from his sister, Cornelia, who suffered from the same disease and passed away a few years ago. The chair barely had any tread on it and was not in a good general condition.
Willie Junior was elated about the new chair and thanked Mrs Thataoni from the bottom of his heart.
